Saturday shortlist: festival day, food trucks, and a free morning
Free On the Lawn at 8, Japanese Fall Festival and food trucks by midday, free downtown music at 7.

Friday already covered the big evening forks — symphony at Hammons, Kolby at the Regency, and NAMI’s neon run. Here’s the daytime spine for Saturday, plus a free downtown night and a Sunday family pick.
On the Lawn at the Art Museum
Saturday, September 12 · 8am–1pm
Hatch Lawn · Springfield Art Museum · 1111 E. Brookside Dr. · Free · All ages · Weather pending
Second-Saturday drop-in on the lawn while the museum building stays closed for construction (portable bathrooms on site). Limited parking in the west lot.
- 8am — Free yoga with Wellness Collective (bring a mat or towel and water; under 18 with a caregiver; Register)
- 9am — Fassnight Creek cleanup and soundbathing (both ask you to register)
- 10am–1pm — Yard games, music-making art, and live music from C-Street Jamboree
Best for: a free Saturday morning with kids, or anyone who wants to start the day outside without a ticket.
Japanese Fall Festival — Saturday peak
Saturday, September 12 · 11am–10pm
Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden · 2400 S. Scenic Ave. · $15 adults · $4 ages 3–12 · Tickets at the gate only (cash or card) · SSCA members free · Pets welcome under standard park rules
Biggest day of the weekend — full stage schedule from late morning through evening, food and craft vendors, tea café noon–3, candlelight walk after dusk. Enter right from Scenic northbound (no left turns into or out of the park during the festival).
Best for: families and out-of-towners who want one plan that can fill the afternoon and evening.
Skip if you only wanted a quiet stroll — Saturday is the crowded peak.

Ozark Empire Fairgrounds — North Woods · Enter Gate 10 on Smith St. (across from Hillcrest High) · Free admission & parking · Food and drink for purchase · All ages · Rain or shine · No pets except service animals
Bring a chair or blanket. Stage music includes Portal Party (11–1), Roxie & The Moon King (3–5), and Justin Larkin (5–7). Midday band listing still conflicts on the organizer site — don’t count on a specific 1–3 name.
Best for: a hungry afternoon with friends or kids when you don’t want a sit-down restaurant.
